This work was composed in 1956 at the request of a classmate at the Eastman School of Music, a dear friend, Nancy Cringoli. She was marrying Frank Sylvester and wanted this for their wedding mass. It was first performed by the choir of Holy Rosary Church in Rochester, N. Y. Nancy conducted this choir, and the composer sang with it, while they both were students at Eastman. Since then it has been performed by this and other choirs, and as a solo work for weddings.

The Allegheny College Chamber Choir, conducted by Ward Jamison, made the recording included here during their spring concert, 8 April 2006, at Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania. The concert was part of a year-long commemoration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of The Allegheny Singers by Morten J. Luvaas. The composer sang with this group and studied with Luvaas, 1950-1952, when he was a student at Allegheny College before transferring to the Eastman School of Music.
